Rainy Season Readiness
We are officially in the South Florida wet season, June through October, when 70 percent of the year's rain falls. Flooding may happen when large amounts of rain occur over a short period of time or from a single, heavy storm, tropical system or hurricane. Town Receives $217,000 Energy Efficiency Grant
The Town of Lantana was recently awarded a grant for $217,000 to install several types of energy-saving equipment when we convert the old Lions Club building into a Police Support Services facility. The Town applied for the grant from Palm Beach County which offered Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) funds. This money originated at the U.S. Department of Energy through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The purpose of the grant is to help pay for projects that: (a) reduce fossil fuel emissions in a manner that is environmentally sustainable; (b) reduce total energy use; and (c) improve energy efficiency in the building sector, the transportation sector and other appropriate sectors.
The building renovation will begin later this summer. With the grant money we will be able to upgrade many of the building systems to create a real energy saving showplace. The grant will pay for a roof-top photovoltaic system to generate electricity for the building, a solar water heating system, additional environmentally-friendly insulation, energy-efficient windows and a very high-efficiency air conditioning system. The Town may actually generate more electricity than the building uses, so we can sell it back to FPL. The completed building will provide a real-life demonstration for residents, businesses and other agencies to see how to achieve significant energy and cost savings. Keep an eye on this exciting project!!

East Ocean Avenue Bridge Replacement Construction to replace the County-owned bridge is expected to begin summer of 2011. The center span will be 21 feet in height which will reduce bridge openings by an estimated 40%. Additionally, the design will be wider to allow for separation of pedestrians and traffic by a barrier and wider sidewalks so pedestrians and bicyclists can cross safely. OUR MISSION To preserve Lantana's small town atmosphere through responsible government and quality service.
The Town of Lantana is a coastal community in Palm Beach County, which still retains the charm of its origins as an old Florida fishing village. Although it is one of the smaller communities of Palm Beach County, it is noted as one of the oldest. The first settlers came after Congress passed the Armed Occupation Act in 1842 at the end of the Seminole Wars. One of the pioneer settlers, The Lyman family, is distinguished as the founders of the town. M. B. Lyman brought his family to Lantana in 1888 and started several enterprises. He established a store, Indian Trading Post, and post office in 1889. As postmaster, Mr. Lyman named the post office as Lantana Point for the wild Lantana plant, which grew in abundance in the area. The 'Point' was later dropped. One of the Lyman businesses was the Lantana Fish Company where one hundred thousand-pound catches of fish were common. In the early 1900's the gathering and marketing of oysters became the leading industry. The Town of Lantana was incorporated in 1921 with twenty-two residents voting in the first election. At the time of incorporation, the area of Lantana was one square mile with a population of 100 residents. Today, the Town covers 2' sq. miles, and the year round population is 9,500 with a seasonal population of approximately 13,500.
